Mozzarella di Bufala at Risk as U.S. Tariffs Loom

Proposed US tariffs on Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO risk undoing years of investment to build market share in the United States, where the product has gained traction among consumers despite persistent logistical hurdles.

The US accounts for around 10% of total exports of the protected-origin cheese, with an export value of more than €30mn. While current figures are significant, industry representatives warn that the real threat lies in stifling the sector’s long-term growth potential in the American market.

Particularly vulnerable is the Horeca segment—hotels, restaurants, and catering—where buffalo mozzarella is positioned as a premium product, retailing at between $60 and $80 per kilogram and featured on menus at high-end and celebrity-frequented establishments.

In response, the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO Consortium is exploring opportunities in established and emerging markets showing an appetite for the product. At the same time, it is urging Italian and European policymakers to pursue a forceful diplomatic response to prevent what it warns could be lasting and difficult-to-reverse damage to the sector.
